This conference, organized by the International Federation of Associations of Pharmaceutical Physicians (IFAPP) will take place on Monday 18th and Tuesday 19th of April 2011, in ‘Pakhuis de Zwijger' in Amsterdam. Introduction Clinical research forms an essential part in the development of new and better medicines. It does not only produce new knowledge but it also translates into better ways to treat diseases and improve healthcare. Generally there are two types of clinical research, industry-sponsored (industrial) and investigator-initiated (academic) research. Efficient collaboration between industry and academia is essential in conducting high quality clinical trials because of the usually large size of clinical trials requiring many investigators and to ensure all interests are served. Does the sponsor matter? The interaction between academia and industry lies at the heart of any drug development process. With controversy around these interactions the conference aims to focus on reappraisal of the relationship between industry and academia. How can we define these partnerships whilst respecting the different approach of both stakeholders? The first day of the conference will focus on the value of partnerships in academic-industrial trials. The second day will focus on the perspective of journal editors, chief medical officers and the EMA, leading towards increasing publication credibility, thereby paving the road towards trust. The exclusion of older adults as participants in clinical trials is highly problematic, because older adults have disproportionately high rates of cancer, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer disease or related disorders, arthritis, and Parkinson's disease. The reasons for the exclusion of older adults in clinical trials are complex and challenging. Older patients face a combination of obstacles. These include comorbidities,  decision making incapacities linked with cognitive impairment,  communication issues (e.g., aphasia, or hearing difficulties that interfere with telephone interviews and impaired vision that affects written surveys or tests), and physical immobility that limits travel. Such differences may be difficult to understand and this workshop - following the success of its predecessors - will give an opportunity for these difficulties to be freely discussed by representatives of research ethics committees, sponsors and investigators and will hopefully lead to some conclusions as to how best these difficulties should be addressed or even avoided. The workshop will begin with a keynote address on a theme appropriate for the environment in which it is being held and will then be followed by three case-based discussions, introduced by persons closely involved in the cases to be featured. There will therefore be plenty of opportunities for interactive dialogue and the workshop will conclude with a presentation on cases of fraud and misconduct in research projects that have involved research ethics committees in various ways. It was set up in 2008 by four organisations: the Dutch Genetic Alliance (VSOP), the European Forum for Good Clinical Practice (EFGCP), the European Genetic Alliances’ Network (EGAN) and the British Genetic Interest Group (GIG). Its aim is to investigate, promote and advise on the role of patient organisations in clinical trials. PatientPartner believes that through partnership between all stakeholders in the clinical trials context, the clinical research will be more effective, and the resulting therapies will be more representative of the patients’ needs; involving patient organisations, as partners, in all stages of clinical research would contribute to speeding up recruitment, improving research quality, communication, and outcomes.
