It seems that IFAPP was able to establish another significant tradition in the scientific scenario. After the very successful symposium organized in July 2000, during the Florence Congress, we were invited to organize two events for the programme of the Istanbul Conference: a full-day course on the Methodology of Clinical Trials, held on Monday June 23, and a symposium entitled Placebo versus non-placebo in Clinical Trials, held on Friday June 27. The course on the Methodology of Clinical Trials was one of the most appreciated scientific events: we had 48 participants, coming from 11 different countries (of course Turkey, but also Switzerland, Norway, Italy, Spain, Romania, Germany, Lithuania, Austria, Czech Republic and also USA). The faculty was considered not only of good scientific background, but its international origin contributed to create a really global picture! Indeed we had speakers from 6 different countries, who not only were able to give very detailed and documented presentations, but also were very helpful in the discussion, offering useful explanations coming from their personal experience. Finally, thanks to the very efficient work of Caroline, we were able to give all course participants a dossier containing: the course programme, biographies and presentations of all speakers, and the IFAPP Code of Ethical Conduct: it was a well-appreciated gift, which will certainly remind IFAPP to all participants. The course was co-chaired by Prof Hakan Ergun, from the Department of Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacology of the University of Ankara, and by Dr Domenico Criscuolo, President of IFAPP: this collaboration was highly appreciated, and gave IFAPP a significant visibility in the Turkish scientific arena. The second event was the symposium on the placebo use in clinical trials: it was co-chaired by Prof Janos Borvendeg, Professor of Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Budapest and Medical Director of the Drug Agency in Hungary, and by Dr Domenico Criscuolo, President of IFAPP: this afternoon session was attended by about 90 participants, and was followed by an intense discussion from the floor, to demonstrate not only the interest for the topic, but also the ability of speakers to stimulate a vivid debate. In the end, I believe that IFAPP participation to the 6th EACPT was a very good investment, which has significantly contributed to strengthen our scientific image among the members of a scientific association with whom we frequently interact in our professional activity. Let me take this opportunity to thank all IFAPP colleagues who helped me in this event, and Caroline who made a significant effort to prepare the excellent course material.
